How Can I Tell if I Suffered a Concussion in My Accident?

Published on Jan 27, 2023 at 8:19 pm in Brain Injuries.

Brain injuries are always frightening, no matter how minor they may appear to be at first. If you have been diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) following a Baton Rouge vehicle crash or workplace accident, you need a doctor with experience treating brain injuries—but you also need a lawyer who understands how this injury could affect you in the long term.

What Is an MTBI?

The real danger of a mild brain injury is that it is not always diagnosed right away. If there is no—or very brief—loss of consciousness or disorientation following an accident, the victim may not realize they have a brain injury. Also called a concussion or minor brain injury, an MTBI often doesn’t show up on a brain scan. However, anyone who has been in a car accident or serious fall should be aware of the following possible signs of an MTBI:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Cognitive difficulty
  • Memory loss
  • Attention deficits
  • Mood swings

While most concussion-sufferers make a complete recovery, they should be under the care of a doctor during the two to three weeks after the accident. Another jolt or blow to the head during this time could result in a much more serious brain injury.

Accidents That Can Cause MTBI

Even a minor accident can cause a mild traumatic brain injury, whether your head hits a hard surface or not. MTBIs can be caused by:

  • Whiplash or another jolt to the back or neck in a car accident
  • A motorcycle or bicycle crash while wearing a helmet
  • A slip and fall or fall from height, even if the head does not hit the ground
  • Any head impact—on the ground, dashboard, or any other surface—even if there is no bruise or bump

If you experienced any of these scenarios in a vehicle crash that was not your fault or a workplace accident, you may be owed compensation. A personal injury and workers’ comp attorney can make sure you get what you deserve.
